Hello Your Shot! Welcome to 2017.
As we continue to grow our ranks of storytellers from around the globe—soon to surpass 800,000 photographers—and to enrich our amazing collection of over seven million images, we thought it would be a good time for a reset. Or, more accurately, a restatement of who we are and what we believe in.
We are a diverse community of photographers from every country in the world. We believe in the power of visual storytelling to create change and to connect strangers. We love photography for many different reasons, but what jumps out about this community are the heartfelt connections that are made each and every day because of Your Shot.
While there are many places where you can upload a photo, there are no other places where you can share an image with National Geographic photographers and editors. We look at every image submitted and, as much as we can, we provide feedback by leaving comments, notes, and choosing your photos as editors’ favorites. Every month we publish your images in our magazines and online. Every day we post our 12 favorite in the Daily Dozen and ask the community to vote for theirs.
We share your amazing images on our social channels, on other sites, and at events. We credit the photographer and when possible we link back to your profile. We want the world to know what it is you are seeing and sharing with us. Because we look for ways to share your images and give them the exposure they deserve, it is incredibly important that we can trust your photos. Things move very quickly in the digital space and we often don’t have time to reach out to the photographer for more information about the image and/or the caption. Sometimes that means we have to choose another photo.
Here are five things to remember if you want to be published by National Geographic:
- If you did not take the photo, do not upload it to Your Shot.
- Do not remove anything from the photo—the content must not be altered beyond basic color correction, sharpening, and minor retouching, such as removing dust spots.
- Please provide pertinent caption information such as who, what, why, when, and where.
- We see a lot of images—show us how YOU uniquely see the world.
- Make the most out of our assignments by shooting fresh pictures—it’s a new year and time for new photos!
Finally, we are here for you, but this is your community and we rely on you to let us know when there is a problem. Please visit our Support Center, which has dozens of FAQs and a form where you can email us: http://help.nationalgeographic.com/
Thanks for your help. And let’s continue to tell stories together in 2017!
